This time of year you can have trouble with your cars door locks. They can be frozen or be sticky in the cold weather.  What follows are some do's and most importantly some DON’TS.

Don’t every apply heat (flame) to your key or the door lock hoping to thaw out the lock so it can open.  The problem is that you can damage delicate electronics that may be in your key fob as well as the car door itself.

If your car has non electronic locks and your key carries no electronics in it you can use direct heat (a lighter) or hot water on the key to thaw the car door lock.

Don’t pour hot water on your key or the door lock hoping to thaw out the lock so it can open.  The problem is that the water can damage delicate electronics that may be in your key fob as well as the car door itself.

Don’t use a wrench or some type of bar to force your key to turn in the lock.  More than likely you will break off your key in the lock. Metal fractures with surprisingly little force when it's cold out. Your cold car key could break off in the car door lock, or you could damage the lock mechanism. Either way, it's better to be patient and don't try to force the key to turn.

Warm The Door Lock With A Hair Dryer: This is the most time-consuming method for de-icing a car door lock. You'll need to run an extension cord out to your car and focus the hair dryer on the door lock to unfreeze the lock mechanism.

Try Another Door: If your car model has multiple manual door locks you can try another door. It sounds simple, but many people get flustered and panic when they discover that their car door lock is frozen and they may not think of trying another door! Try another door or the hatch. Often, one of the other door locks will work just fine!
