So You Just Bought A New Home… Now Call 35th Ave Locksmith

Save real money and real time, make the call to 35th Ave Locksmith in the first place.

Why you might ask if I have just bought a brand new home would I need to call a Locksmith?

The real truth is that Contractors stink at installing dead bolts. I can't tell you how many times I go out to rekey one or let someone in, and I find problems. If it's not installed right, it can't protect you, your wife and your children.

The best lock is a dead bolt that’s properly installed. (Please note properly installed)  It should have at least a one-inch of “throw,” and on the “strike side,” there should be a security plate with screws at least three inches long that go all the way into the wood surrounding the door’s frame. Most of these have just four short screws.

If you have a window on or near your door, a thumb-turn dead bolt doesn’t do any good at all. The bad guys either cut or knock out the glass, stick a hand in, and turn. Get a double cylinder lock that needs a key on the inside. And guess what don’t leave a key in the inside cylinder.  For safety sake have one nearby but never leave a key in the lock itself.

It’s easy to defeat the cheapo locks from big-box stores. Most are mass-produced by reputable manufacturers but to very low standards. Look for at least a grade 2 lock. If the salesperson has no idea what you are asking about it time to walk away.

Last but not least - When you buy a new house, always have your locks rekeyed. Otherwise there's probably a master key out there that can easily open your home. Nearly every trade that worked on your home will have a copy of your front door key. If that doesn’t keep you up at night I don’t know what would.

Keys stamped “Do not duplicate” are duplicated all the time. Ask us about high-security locks with keys that can’t be replicated at the hardware store.

Divorce lock-outs are always a big challenge. The soon-to-be-ex wife will call and say she’s locked out, so I get her in and change the locks. Then the husband calls with the same request. I refer him to a competitor.

You're supposed to check ID before you open anything. But half the time when someone is locked out of their house or car, where do you think their ID is?
