No, All Locks Aren’t Created Equal

Did you know that much like meat in your grocery store locks go through a grading system? No, locks don’t come with the same type of markings. Or do you even know what the difference is between a Prime cut and a Choice cut of meat? Which one is better? How about a Select cut?

Yes, we are here to talk about locks… after all we aren’t called 35th Avenue Meatmarket… We are 35th Ave Locksmith.

The ANSI and BHMA industry standards exist to help identify the quality and durability of locksets via a series of operational and security tests.

The following is a listing as to how the standards are set. BHMA (Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association) is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), a private non–profit organization that administers and coordinates the voluntary standardization to develop and maintain performance standards for builder’s hardware.

ANSI/BHMA standards set forth different product grades for door hardware products. These product grades are defined by progressive levels of performance benchmarks in each applicable standard.

So what does this mean to me?

    Grade 3 Good: Residential Security

Grade 2 Better: Light Commercial and Heavy Residential

Grade 1 Best: Heavy Commercial Use

Each grade specifies minimum acceptable requirements for:

    Operation i.e.: key torque; cycles

Security i.e.: pull strength, impact resistance finish

If you want to stop everyone cold in their tracks consider the new Master Lock NightWatch® deadbolt. It is the ONLY deadbolt that prevents an intruder (or anyone at all) from entering your home… even if they have your key.

When the NightWatch® feature is engaged, the lock cannot be opened from the outside. Even with a duplicate key.
