No, All Locks Aren’t Created Equal

Did you know that much like meat in your grocery store locks go through a grading system? No, locks don’t come with the same type of markings. Or do you even know what the difference is between a Prime cut and a Choice cut of meat? Which one is better? How about a Select cut?

Yes, we are here to talk about locks… after all we aren’t called 35th Avenue Meatmarket… We are 35th Ave Locksmith.

The ANSI and BHMA industry standards exist to help identify the quality and durability of locksets via a series of operational and security tests.

The following is a listing as to how the standards are set. BHMA (Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association) is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), a private non–profit organization that administers and coordinates the voluntary standardization to develop and maintain performance standards for builder’s hardware.

ANSI/BHMA standards set forth different product grades for door hardware products. These product grades are defined by progressive levels of performance benchmarks in each applicable standard.

So what does this mean to me?

    Grade 3 Good: Residential Security

Grade 2 Better: Light Commercial and Heavy Residential

Grade 1 Best: Heavy Commercial Use

Each grade specifies minimum acceptable requirements for:

    Operation i.e.: key torque; cycles

Security i.e.: pull strength, impact resistance finish

If you want to stop everyone cold in their tracks consider the new Master Lock NightWatch® deadbolt. It is the ONLY deadbolt that prevents an intruder (or anyone at all) from entering your home… even if they have your key.

When the NightWatch® feature is engaged, the lock cannot be opened from the outside. Even with a duplicate key.

35th Ave Locksmith Presents Key Arizona Places: Glen Canyon Dam

Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete arch dam on the Colorado River in northern Arizona near the town of Page. The dam was built to provide hydroelectricity and flow regulation from the upper Colorado River Basin to the lower. Its reservoir is called Lake Powell, and is the second largest artificial lake in the country, extending upriver well into Utah. The dam is named for Glen Canyon, a colorful series of gorges, most of which now lies under the reservoir.

The dam was proposed in the 1950s as part of the Colorado River Storage Project, a U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) federal water project that would develop reservoir storage on the upper Colorado River and several of its major tributaries. The project's main purpose was to provide water storage to ensure the delivery of sufficient water to the lower basin during years of drought, so as to allow the upper basin to better utilize its allocation of river flow as designated in the 1922 Colorado River Compact. However, problems arose when the USBR proposed to build dams in the federally protected Echo Park canyon in Utah. After extensive policy disputes and legal challenges with environmental organizations such as the Sierra Club, they settled for a high dam at Glen Canyon.

Construction of Glen Canyon Dam started in 1956 and was not finished until 1966. When the reservoir filled, the dam began to deliver a regulated flow of water downstream and a supply of electricity to the region. In 1983, major floods nearly led to the dam's collapse, but disaster was averted by a close margin. By suppressing floods and other factors that once characterized the Colorado, the dam has led to major physical and ecological changes in the lower river. Controversy continues over the effects both positive and negative of the dam, which has also been antagonized in many literary works.

Lake Powell is one of the most popular houseboating and water-skiing areas in the United States; the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, which surrounds the reservoir, receives more than 1.9 million visitors annually. About 300,000 of these tourists travel via boat to Rainbow Bridge in Utah, a large natural arch once very hard to access, but now easily reachable because one of the arms of the reservoir extends near it.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area draws more than two million visitors annually. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, waterskiing, jet-skiing, and hiking. Prepared campgrounds can be found at each marina, but many visitors choose to rent a houseboat or bring their own camping equipment, find a secluded spot somewhere in the canyons, and make their own.

Currently most Marinas on the lake don't have Automatic Identification System monitoring stations that transmit boat positions to the AIS websites for the boating community. A substantial number of vessels on the lake do not have AIS transponders, so extra precautions must be taken with respect to boating safety.

So You Just Bought A New Home… Now Call 35th Ave Locksmith

Save real money and real time, make the call to 35th Ave Locksmith in the first place.

Why you might ask if I have just bought a brand new home would I need to call a Locksmith?

The real truth is that Contractors stink at installing dead bolts. I can't tell you how many times I go out to rekey one or let someone in, and I find problems. If it's not installed right, it can't protect you, your wife and your children.

The best lock is a dead bolt that’s properly installed. (Please note properly installed)  It should have at least a one-inch of “throw,” and on the “strike side,” there should be a security plate with screws at least three inches long that go all the way into the wood surrounding the door’s frame. Most of these have just four short screws.

If you have a window on or near your door, a thumb-turn dead bolt doesn’t do any good at all. The bad guys either cut or knock out the glass, stick a hand in, and turn. Get a double cylinder lock that needs a key on the inside. And guess what don’t leave a key in the inside cylinder.  For safety sake have one nearby but never leave a key in the lock itself.

It’s easy to defeat the cheapo locks from big-box stores. Most are mass-produced by reputable manufacturers but to very low standards. Look for at least a grade 2 lock. If the salesperson has no idea what you are asking about it time to walk away.

Last but not least - When you buy a new house, always have your locks rekeyed. Otherwise there's probably a master key out there that can easily open your home. Nearly every trade that worked on your home will have a copy of your front door key. If that doesn’t keep you up at night I don’t know what would.

Keys stamped “Do not duplicate” are duplicated all the time. Ask us about high-security locks with keys that can’t be replicated at the hardware store.

Divorce lock-outs are always a big challenge. The soon-to-be-ex wife will call and say she’s locked out, so I get her in and change the locks. Then the husband calls with the same request. I refer him to a competitor.

You're supposed to check ID before you open anything. But half the time when someone is locked out of their house or car, where do you think their ID is?

Do You Have A Family Safety Plan?

First there are several types of family safety plans.  We are only going to talk about one in this blog.  That safety plan is for fire safety at your home. We are even going to narrow that one even more to what is “Your Family Fire Escape Plan?”

In the event of a home fire everyone needs to know what to do and where to meet so that no one is trapped or left behind.

A fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes.  Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Also, mark the location of each smoke alarm.

Basic fire escape planning Tips for creating and practicing a home fire escape plan.

Clear your escape routes Make sure windows and doors in your home are unblocked.

Escape planning for two or three story homes. Sometimes the safest action is to stay put and wait for the firefighters.

Fire safety in manufactured homes Since 1976, manufactured homes must meet HUD safety requirements.

Security bars Sometimes a device that prevents one hazard creates another.

Children need to know My Fire Safety Plan story. This story provides basic fire escape planning for children ages 4-8.

Smartphone Apps For Home Device Control?

Time saving and convince are two very popular reasons to add Apps to your smart phone. There are so many to choose from, where do you start?

Your smartphone is only as good as the apps you use. Of course there are other components to a quality smartphone than just applications. Things like cameras, Internet connectivity, file storage, but when you use the right applications you can do more than you think.

Let’s look at some ways we can use our devices to manage our homes. You see, we live in an age where home appliances are becoming “smarter” every-day. That means they have more powerful computer chips installed within their plastic bodies and they can talk to each other and to your smartphone via Wi-Fi. Here are some ways you can utilize your smartphone to control your home.

Pet Feeder
If you’re like me, you love your pet, but you’re super busy and it’s not always convenient to be home at scheduled feeding times. There are several applications on the market you can download that allow a visual confirmation with a camera and a remote food dispenser. We can all thank them for taking some hassle out of owning a pet.

Mood Lighting
Phillips makes a smart light bulb called Hue, which allows you to easily control all the light bulbs in your house. This makes a lot of sense if you don’t want to completely retrofit to new lamps or light switches. Simply by these smart bulbs and you can change the color of the lights, how bright or dim you want them to be, and of course turn them on and off… so much for the clap-on and clap-off lights. You can see a demo at most Staples office supply stores.

Remote Thermostats
A new device called, a Nest, is getting a lot of buzz lately. Remember the iPod? Yeah well, the guys who designed the iPod created a really neat thermostat. This thermostat has Wi-Fi, and it comes with an iPhone application. That means you can control the temperature of your home from anywhere! Do you want to save money by turning the temperature down while you’re gone, but you don’t want to come home to a freezing house? No problem. Use your smartphone to turn up the temperature before you get home.

Remote Car Start
For convenience and safety there are several applications on the market which connect your smartphone to your vehicle, allowing you to remotely start it and turn on your heater. This is especially beneficial when you live in climates which, well let’s just say, aren’t friendly for wearing shorts all year. Running outside in 10 degrees below to warm up the car is brutal and unnecessary.

35th Ave Locksmith Presents Key Arizona Places: Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was controversially named after President Herbert Hoover.

Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and the lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned over the dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.

Hoover Dam holds back Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume. The dam is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. Heavily travelled U.S. 93 ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened.

The first concrete was poured into the dam on June 6, 1933, 18 months ahead of schedule. Since concrete heats and contracts as it cures, the potential for uneven cooling and contraction of the concrete posed a serious problem. Bureau of Reclamation engineers calculated that if the dam was built in a single continuous pour, the concrete would take 125 years to cool and the resulting stresses would cause the dam to crack and crumble. Instead, the ground where the dam was to rise was marked with rectangles, and concrete blocks in columns were poured, some as large as 50 feet  square and 5 feet high. Each five-foot form contained a series of 1 inch steel pipes through which first cool river water, then ice-cold water from a refrigeration plant was run. Once an individual block had cured and had stopped contracting, the pipes were filled with grout. Grout was also used to fill the hairline spaces between columns, which were grooved to increase the strength of the joints.

The concrete was delivered in huge steel buckets 7 feet high and almost 7 feet in. These buckets, which weighed 20 tons when full, were filled at two massive concrete plants on the Nevada side, and were delivered to the site in special railcars. The buckets were then suspended from aerial cableways, which were used to deliver the bucket to a specific column. As the required grade of aggregate in the concrete differed depending on placement in the, it was vital that the bucket be maneuvered to the proper column. Once the bottom of the bucket opened up, disgorging 8 cubic yards of concrete, a team of men worked it throughout the form. Although there are myths that men were caught in the pour and are entombed in the dam to this day, each bucket only deepened the concrete in a form by an inch, and Six Companies engineers would not have permitted a flaw caused by the presence of a human body.

A total of 3,250,000 cubic yards of concrete was used in the dam before concrete pouring ceased on May 29, 1935. In addition, 1,110,000 cubic yards were used in the power plant and other works. More than 582 miles of cooling pipes were placed within the concrete. Overall, there is enough concrete in the dam to pave a two-lane highway from San Francisco to New York. Concrete cores were removed from the dam for testing in 1995; they showed that "Hoover Dam's concrete has continued to slowly gain strength" and the dam is composed of a "durable concrete having a compressive strength exceeding the range typically found in normal mass concrete" Hoover Dam concrete is not subject to alkali–silica reaction as the Hoover Dam builders happened to use nonreactive aggregate, unlike that at downstream Parker Dam, where the alkali–silica reaction has caused measurable deterioration.

What Makes A Secure Padlock?

Do you need a good padlock? They can be used to secure many different types of property.  If you ride a bicycle you are familiar with the need to keep you bike from riding away when you aren’t looking.

If you have a tool shed at your home a padlock is the normal way that most homeowners keep their valuable tools from walking away.

Of course many of us have commercial storage sheds where we keep all types of overflow.  You can have many valuable items that are exposed to random folks that are in that area every day.

I generally see padlocks as a way to keep mostly-honest folks, honest. Are we wrong, in that thinking? Do you know that some locks are truly significantly better at protecting your property?

Here’s a rundown of some of the features that make a difference:

The standard padlock comes in laminated, shrouded, and solid-body variants. The laminated version is the one you see in the infamous Master Lock “Tough Under Fire” ad, where they claim that their lock survives an encounter with a sharpshooter.

Unlike solid-body locks, laminated locks are less prone to cracking under heavy prying because the pry force is distributed among the laminated locks’ many individual plates of steel and the rivets that hold them together. If one plate cracks, the others still contribute structural strength; you have to crack lots of the layers to break the lock. You’ll notice in the video above that the bullet tears a hole clean through the lock, but the lock stays shut because the plates are still held together by many of the rivets.

Shrouded models add a case cover that extends above the lock body to make it harder for thieves to slip bolt cutters around the lock’s shackle.

Disc padlocks work along this same principal, incorporating a round shape that partially hides the shackle from cutters or pry bars. However, most disc padlocks are solid-body, which leaves them pretty open to brute-force smashing.

Hidden shackle padlocks take the whole thing a step further, extending the faces of the padlock’s disc to cover the shackle entirely.

Next you’ll find all sorts of metallurgy claims, especially in terms of the shackle. And finally you’ll note all sorts of convenience features like stainless keyways to prevent corrosion and so on.

When you need a lock you need a GOOD lock, not the cheapest you can buy, but the best you can buy.

35th Ave Locksmith & NSC; Sharing Our Roads Safely With School Buses

School buses are one of the safest forms of transportation on the road today. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, riding a bus to school is 13 times safer than riding in a passenger vehicle and 10 times safer than walking to school. The reality of school bus safety is that more children are hurt outside the bus than inside as passengers. Most of the children who lose their lives in bus-related crashes are pedestrians, four to seven years old, who are hit by the bus or by motorists illegally passing a stopped school bus. For this reason, it is necessary to know the proper laws and procedures for sharing the road safely with school buses:

All 50 states have a law making it illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.

School buses use yellow flashing lights to alert motorists that they are preparing to stop to load or unload children. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign arm signals to motorists that the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off the bus.

All 50 states require that traffic in both directions stop on undivided roadways when students are entering or exiting a school bus.

While state laws vary on what is required on a divided roadway, in all cases, traffic behind the school bus (traveling in the same direction) must stop.

The area 10 feet around a school bus is where children are in the most danger of being hit. Stop your car far enough from the bus to allow children the necessary space to safely enter and exit the bus.

Be alert. Children are unpredictable. Children walking to or from their bus are usually very comfortable with their surroundings. This makes them more likely to take risks, ignore hazards or fail to look both ways when crossing the street.

Never pass a school bus on the right. It is illegal and could have tragic consequences.

When it comes to unlocking a car, we provide the fastest, most reliable lockout service 24 hours a day, every day of the year – all at low rates and fully insured.

Call now 602-242-5429 and have a certified professional locksmith estimate the price of having a new master key system installed at your home or business.

How Safe Is Your Front Door Lock?

Is your front door lock the same as it was when you moved into your house? The lock seems like an old, dear friend, but it may not be. Nearly 3 million U.S. homes are broken into every year. Although not all break-ins are preventable, exterior locks and dead bolts are your first line of defense.

Modern, up-to-date, locks offer much greater protection. But picking the right lockset can be very confusing. Here are the three major types of exterior locks on the market — keyed-entry doorknobs, handle sets and dead bolts — to sort out features and costs. In case all you need is a way to keep the kids out of your room at nap time or a new door handle for the closet, we also tell you how to judge the offerings in privacy and passage locksets.

Lock Types

The obvious purpose of any lock is to keep unwanted people out, but the kind of lock you buy depends on where it's going in the house and your budget. Exterior doors. To be truly secure, any exterior door needs a dead bolt. You have a choice of separates — a deadbolt and a lockset mounted separately — or a handle set that incorporates both features. Prices vary from $25 to over $300, reflecting a wide range of quality and style. Higher-end units typically feature solid, forged-brass components and a Grade 2 or even a Grade 1 (commercial duty) security rating. An antitheft option you should look for on locksets or handle sets is a dead-locking latch bolt; it prevents burglars from jimmying the latch with a credit card.

On dead bolts, look for hardened pins that can withstand sawing. And because a latch or bolt is only as strong as the strike plate it engages, make sure the lock you're considering comes with a heavy-duty plate and 3-in. screws. A handle set that allows you to open both the dead bolt and latch from inside with a single motion is convenient and could be a lifesaver in an emergency. Another terrific convenience is universal keying, which allows you to carry one house key despite having installed locks on other doors from different makers. As for esthetics, look for dual-torque springs that prevent knobs from sagging and a no-tarnish lifetime finish. Interior doors. Interior door locks only prevent nuisance entry — they won't keep bad guys at bay.

Grade 2 or 3 security might be sufficient. But you might want a model with a latch kickoff that keeps the door from accidentally locking behind you. Also be sure there's an emergency release (look for a small hole in the center of the handle) that lets you open the door from outside with a paper clip in an emergency. As with exterior locks, look for dual-torque springs to keep knobs from sagging and a no-tarnish lifetime finish. Interior locks cost considerably less than exterior locks. Most go for $8 to $16, though high-end forged, solid-brass locks can cost 10 times that.

Call us at 602-242-5429 so we can help you choose and install the right lock for your home.

Locksmithing: Locksmithing is the profession of working with locks and keys. A person who does this is called a locksmith. Locksmiths fix broken locks, make keys, and install security systems like alarms. In most countries locksmiths must follow a strict set of rules. In some countries locksmiths start as apprentices. In others they must get a certificate or degree after training at a school or university.

At 35th Ave Locksmith we are very proud to be a certified locksmith.

While we use automated key-cutting machines to duplicate your key in many cases the machines don’t do well if your master is badly worn or damaged. We know this just by looking at your master key and know why and when we need to hand cut the duplicate so you can get back into to your home, business or vehicle.

At 35th Ave Locksmith we are your CAN DO lock and key solution.

Call now 602-242-5429 and have a certified professional locksmith estimate the price of having a new master key system installed at your home or business.

35th Ave Locksmith Presents Key Arizona Places: The Capitol Building

The Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix, Arizona, United States, was the last home for Arizona's Territorial government, until Arizona became a state in 1912. Initially all three branches of the new state government occupied the four floors of the statehouse. As the state expanded the branches relocated to adjacent buildings and additions. The 1901 portion of the Capitol is now maintained as the Arizona Capitol Museum with the mission to Connect People to Arizona Government - Past and Present.

Construction of the Capitol began in 1898, and it began operation in 1901. In 1918 and 1938, expansions were added on the west side of the building, which had the same architecture and increased the total square footage from the original 40,000 to a final 123,000. It was home to the Legislature until 1960, when the current house and senate buildings were constructed, and the Governor's Office until 1974, when the executive tower was built. The state at that time had a plan of converting the original Capitol into a museum dedicated to Arizona's history. The original opening of the Arizona Capitol Museum was announced by Governor Bruce Babbitt at his inauguration in 1978, and hosted over 40,000 schoolchildren in that first year in 1979.

After a restoration, the building was re-opened as a museum in 1981. In the 1990s, more than $3 million was spent to renovate the Capitol and rooms were restored to their original design. Again, due to budget deficits, construction was stopped on a few rooms on the third floor and they remain incomplete. The Capitol is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The building is made largely from materials indigenous to Arizona, including malapai, granite, and the copper dome. The design is optimized for the desert climate of Arizona, with thick masonry walls that insulate the interior, skylights, and round "bullseye" clerestory windows to let heat out of the legislative chambers. The building is topped with a windvane similar to the Winged Victory of Samothrace, visible through a skylight from within the rotunda.

One impressive display shows the enormous silver and copper punchbowl service from the USS Arizona, as well as a bronze sculpture that was ensconced outside the Admiral's stateroom and used as a centerpiece at state dinners where ever the USS Arizona was docked. Both of these historical artifacts survived the sinking of the Arizona because they had been removed from the ship for cleaning prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. The punchbowl service is the only one of its kind and is composed of etched copper panels depicting desert scenes set into a silver bowl ornamented with mermaids, dolphins, waves, and other nautical themes.

The Arizona Capitol Building is located at 1700 W Washington St, Phoenix, AZ 85007

So Your Car Dealer Says It Will Cost $400 To Get A New Car Key???

So you bought a new car and it came with one of those combination remote lock, panic button combination key fobs and you drop and break it or you lose it. A quick trip to the dealership will fix that, right?

The dealer tells you the price of a new one and it takes you 5 minutes to uncross your eyes and get your heart to restart. The service manager tells you that is the best price in town.

You know that price can’t possibly be true so you call around to another car dealer for your brand only to find they want four-hundred-twenty-five dollars to replace your missing key fob.

We have good news for you… a quick trip to 35th Avenue Locksmith can solve your dilemma. We have the latest in programing units to read (the word clone maybe a better description) your old key fob and be able to make a duplicate at a fraction of what the average dealer will want to charge you.

Your cars security system can / will be tied to your keyfob so that there will be no need for any other button device to arm or disarm its alarm or anti-theft tracking system.

Even if you have a new car that comes with what looks like a regular key you may find it to contains a chip with programing that will not be at your local stores key section.  Again 35th Ave Locksmith can come to your rescue.

It is very convenient to be able to walk up to your car and have the driver’s door automatically unlock and then slide into your seat and just push the start button.  In some car brands the car will recognize your individual key fob and even adjust the seat, steering wheel, pedals and mirrors to match your settings before you enter.

You can even remotely start your car to have it heated or cooled by the time you get there.

To deal with these type of key systems you need a locksmith who has kept up with the latest in technology.

If you have questions about replacing a missing key or better yet getting a spare made before you need it just call 602-242-5429 and find out what 35th ave locksmith can do for you.
