Located near Tucson the Biosphere 2 has a unique history which has now led it to its current purpose and mission to serve as a center for research, outreach, teaching and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe.

The University of Arizona assumed ownership of Biosphere 2 in July 2011.  A generous gift from the Philecology Foundation helps fund Biosphere 2 operations and some research projects. Other grants and awards, primarily from the National Science Foundation, also support research activities.

In the 1800s, the Biosphere 2 property was part of the Samaniego CDO Ranch. After several changes of ownership, it became a conference center in the 1960s and 1970s, first for Motorola, then for The University of Arizona. Space Biospheres Ventures bought the property in 1984 and began construction of the current facility in 1986 to research and develop self-sustaining space-colonization technology.

Two missions, between 1991 and 1994, sealed Biospherians inside the glass enclosure to measure survivability. Behind this highly public exercise was useful research that helped further ecological understanding. Several first-person accounts have been published by former crew members that provide different perspectives on the experiment.

In 1994, Decisions Investments Corporation assumed control of the property and Columbia University managed it from 1996-2003 and reconfigured the structure for a different mode of scientific research, including a study on the effects of carbon dioxide on plants. Columbia also built classrooms and housing for college students of earth systems science.

The property was sold June 4, 2007, to CDO Ranching and its development partners who then leased the property to UA from 2007-2011. The enclosure now serves as a tool to support research already underway by UA scientists. As a laboratory for large-scale projects, such as the Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO), the university's stewardship of Biosphere 2 will allow the UA to perform key experiments aimed at quantifying some of the consequences of global climate change.

1. Beef up your service door. The walk-through entry door (called the “service door”) is the No. 1 security weak spot in most garages. It should be equipped with a dead bolt and a heavy-duty strike plate, just like any other exterior door in your house.

2. Lock the entry door. If you have an attached garage, lock the entry door that leads into the house. Too many homeowners rely on the service door and leave the entry door unlocked.

3. Cover your window(s). If crooks can’t see the tools and toys in your garage, they won’t be motivated to get in. Sheer curtains or translucent window film lets in light but keeps valuables out of sight.

4. Add lighting. Bright lighting makes burglars nervous and just might make them go elsewhere. Motion detector lighting is better than on-all-night lighting because it saves energy when it’s off and attracts attention when it’s on.

5. Push and probe the top of the door. By pushing the door inward to create a gap at the top, a crook can insert a wire hook and fish for the release. Some use a wedge to hold the gap open.

6. Use a garage door sensor. The sensor sends a signal to the monitor, telling you whether the door is open or closed.

7. Lots of times garage security is undermined simply because someone forgot to close the door. A garage door monitor is a good reminder. Just stick the sensor to the door and set the monitor in a conspicuous spot like your nightstand. To find a monitor, search online for “garage door monitor.” The brand of your door or opener doesn’t matter; any monitor will work.

8. An automatic door closer provides even more security, since it closes the door whether you’re home or not. Installation requires some simple low-voltage wiring and takes less than an hour. To find one, search online for “automatic garage door closer.”

35th Ave Locksmith Presents Key Arizona Places: Grand Canyon Railway

One of the Key places in Arizona is without a doubt the Grand Canyon. To help protect the Canyon the Park Service has changed many of the rules about access. With few exceptions you need to park outside the Canyon area and arrive either by bus or the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams.

Grand Canyon Railway provides a historic and fun journey to the canyon with the help of authentic western characters who bring the Old West to life.

In my opinion, if you want to visit the Grand Canyon, this is only way to go. It is a very relaxing and enjoyable way to get to the Grand Canyon but more than that it is a wonderful experience for all ages. We were very impressed with every aspect of the trip.

After a nice breakfast at the Grand Depot Cafe, we watched a comical wild-west shootout just next to the depot and hotel.  We were introduced to characters that we met later during the train robbery.

The train departs from the depot in Williams at 9:30 AM and the 65 mile trip takes two hours and fifteen minutes. The journey to the Grand Canyon features a variety of different landscapes; from the Ponderosa pine forest surrounding Williams, to a gentle drop in elevation down to the wide-open prairie before climbing back up to the Pinion pine forests as the Train approaches Grand Canyon National Park.  As we traveled we were told to keep our eyes out for elk, mountain lions, mule deer, squirrels, prairie dogs and even skunks.  We were lucky enough to see a condor while we were in the Grand Canyon and a herd of elk just outside of Williams.

We were in a first class car with facing seats and large picture windows. The PSA (hostess) in our car was very accommodating, knowledgeable as well as entertaining. Some of the jokes were well worn but overall in great fun.

 There were local entertainers who came by to entertain us on both legs of the journey. They were very good and interacted with the passengers. The train was robbed on our way back.  The reaction of the children to the desperadoes was great to watch. All in all very good fun.

We had approximately three and half hours to explore the Grand Canyon.  There are several ways to spend the time you.
