35th Ave Locksmith The Future Of Locks

It may seem strange to start our conversation about the future of locks by starting with smartphones but that may be the very best way. Smartphones are no longer phones first and foremost. They've become command centers for the high-tech hassles of day-to-day life. Everything from Internet browsing and picture-taking to instant messaging and credit card transactions can be done from your ubiquitous communications device.

But one holdout of the analog world has innovators and entrepreneurs scrapping for a digital solution: the centuries-old lock-and-key. It makes sense to fuse those three most essential personal possessions, your phone, wallet and keys into a single device?

Unlike the phone or wallet, though, the challenge here is to replace not just a single house key, but your entire key chain, otherwise, what's the point? If you add smartphone functionality for just one or two locks, all you've done is complicate your entry situations.

For this reason, many analysts foresee slow market growth, especially when it comes to domestic use of smart locks.

Locks and doors tend to have long life cycles. Apart from newly built places, the addressable market may expand rather slowly.

Despite an uncertain outlook, the market is rife with competition. Kevo, Bitlock, Lockitron, UniKey, Goji, KISI, ECKey and August Smart Lock are a few of the start-ups attempting to improve on the traditional house key.

A lock must be secure but easy to use.  A typical home entry door may have to accommodate adults, adults with special needs and children.  Currently there are keyed locks and a combination touchpad and keyed entries.  For the addition of a lock controlled by a smartphone the lock must still allow entry in case your smartphone is forgotten, lost or damaged.

Entry into your locked car can have a keyfob that broadcasts a single so that as you approach your car the door automatically unlocks. People with special needs could use a device like this to open their entry door to replace the now garage door remote like opener.

No matter how the lock world changes you will still need people that understqand and can imnstall and service these new high-tech devices.
